Fashion Trends To Leave in 2023
2022 was the year I decided to stop following trends and curated my style into something more timeless. This meant having to get rid a lot of Shein and being more intentional with where my purchasing power goes. I’ll go into my fashion shift in another diary post, but the point is… Even though I stayed away from trends, doesn’t mean I didn’t have to sit back and be tortured at what was being played out right in front of my very eyes. Some trends I appreciated. Most— however, I wish we would put in a time capsule, but rather than hiding it for new generations to find, we burn it so we can actually pretend they never happened. So here goes the list of what I think we should leave in this soon-to-destruct time capsule:
Wearing Tights as Pants
In the words of Blair Waldorf, “…Tights are not pants!” Those words while uttered in 2008, still ring true today. And no, I’m not talking about your yoga pants or athletic wear. I’m talking about pantyhoses and stockings. I blame Miu Miu for this catastrophe. This was one of the most eyesoring thing to come out F/W ‘23-’24 Paris Fashion Week.
2. Mustard Yellow
Whatever you wanna call it. Mellow Yellow. Canary Yellow. Medallion Yellow. It’s all a bit cringey. Not cringe in the sense of uncool, but it quite literally makes my eyes twitch. And this is coming from someone who looks good in mustard yellow. I own a few items myself. But only a select few people with a very specific type of skin tone can pull this color off. It just washes everyone else out.
3. Crossbody Fanny Packs
Why these ever came back in style is beyond me. I have yet to see a single person who can rock these without me being completely distracted by it. If you’ve ever spoken to me with a crossbody fanny pack on, please know I heard not a word you said as I was so focused on why your bag is the centerpiece of your outfit.
4. Quilted Bags
I must admit: I did own a Vera Bradley bag back in 2016. Actually I had two. One was a tote and the other was a shoulder bag. Thinking back now, I don’t think I ever actually found them aesthetically pleasing. It was just the hype. Let’s leave quilted bags in 2016 where they belong. You know you’re only considering getting it because your favorite K-pop stars are sporting it. I’m looking at you, Jennie Ruby Jane.
5. Camo Print
Is it because we were at risk of going to war? Is that what it is? Just because women were threatened to get drafted does not mean we have to stoop this low, guys. I promise there will be plenty of time for us to wear camo if we get drafted. Let’s not commit prematurely.
6. Sheer Print
Listen… I love transparency more than anything. I’m a tarot reader for crying out loud. But too much of a good thing can be bad. The thing about our current society is we lack the capability to do things in moderation. I, for one, am extremely guilty of this. I feel like as Americans, we often carry the “too much” genes as Jenna Marbles would put it. But when everything is see-through, what is there left to appeal and wonder? I appreciate a little mystery.
7. Sneakers with Long Dresses and Skirts
Don’t throw chairs at me for this. I know a lot of you do this. I’ve really tried to give it a chance, but I can’t overlook it. Please for the love of God, pair your long dresses and ankle length skirts with flats, heels, or even flip flops. Especially if they’re satin or silk.
Next entry, we will discuss trends that can continue in 2024. Stay tuned.
